The Sloane Project

The Sloane Project is a UK wide prospective audit of screen detected non-invasive and atypical hyperplasias of the breast. All UK NHS Breast Screening Units are invited to participate.

It is a multi-disciplinary project involving radiologists, pathologists, surgeons and oncologists. The data for the project are being collected by way of specifically designed data collection forms for each professional group, which will provide full and detailed information about the patients' journey from diagnosis to treatment. It is being administered through the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the Association of Breast Surgery at BASO.

The Sloane Project is named after the late Professor John Sloane, a prominent pathologist who worked at the Royal Liverpool Infirmary, and had a great interest in the pathology of Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

The NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) is currently providing funding for the project (as it has done on various occasions since the inception of the project in April 2003). Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (through an unrestricted educational grant) and Breast Cancer Research Trust (via a two year project grant) have also previously provided funding for the audit, for which we are thankful.  We are also grateful for the private donations that we have received through the course of the project, which have helped us to continue with this important audit.
